Funeral of rock star's father
The church at Howth in Co Dublin was packed for the funeral of Catholic rock star Bono's father yesterday.
Many people stood in the rain outside the church of the Assumption to tribute to Bob Hewson, 75 who died from cancer earlier in the week.
Bono, whose real name is Paul Hewson, his wife Ali and their four children, and his brother Norman led the mourners. During his address, Bono mentioned that his father had been a member of the Coolock Music Society. He said: "I want to thank my old man, my father, for giving me this voice. He was a fine tenor and he always said if I had his voice who knows what might have happened.
During Mass, Bono and The Edge sang a song they dedicated to Mr Hewson called Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. After the service Larry Mullen and The Edge, from U2, helped Bono and Norman carry their father's coffin from the church.
During his illness, Bono flew back to Dublin on a nightly basis from the band's Elevation 2001 tour in Britain to be with his father. He was buried today in the Old Balgriffin Cemetery in Co Dublin.
