Burundi: kidnapped bishop 'to be freed today'
The Papal Nuncio to Burundi announced yesterday that the Bishop of Ruyigi in Burundi, Joseph Nduhirubusa, was going to be released by his kidnappers at 9am this morning. Speaking from Bujumbura, to the missionary news service, Bishop Michael Aidan Courtney, said he was going to personally meet with the rebels. He said the government had been asked not intervene and to keep its troops far away from the area chosen for the bishop's release. For 5 days Bishop Nduhirubusa has been held by rebels of the FDD (Forces for the Defence of Democracy). He was ambushed on 18 May while driving through the Kibira forest. Two security guards travelling with him were killed on the spot. His driver was also abducted.
