World protests over bombing of Gaza
Many thousands took to the streets around the world on Saturday to protest against Israel's bombing of Gaza. Smaller ongoing demonstrations are continuing outside many Israeli embassies.
In London, an estimated 12,000 people - among them Christian groups, parents with children, choirs and pensioners organisations, marched along with Jewish, Muslim and secular protestors. Hundreds threw shoes at Downing Street. In Whitehall, many Muslims knelt in the road to pray for peace.
The march from the Embankment past the Houses of Parliament to a rally in Trafalgar Square in London, was lead by singer Annie Lennox, former model Bianca Jagger and Jewish comedian Alexei Sayle.
Peace protests also took place in many other UK cities, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, Bristol, Liverpool, Exeter, Norwich, Hull, Turnbridge Wells, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Swansea, York, Caernarfon, Bradford and Sheffield. There were also mass demonstrations in other major western capitals and across the Middle East. In Israel, some ten thousand protesters marched in Tel Aviv in a massive demonstration against the war.
In Britain campaigners said they were particularly angry at the catatrophic loss of civilian life in Gaza.
In Glasgow, Barrie Levine, from Scottish Jews for a Just Peace, said: "In common with a growing number of Jews in Israel and internationally, we condemn the air strikes by Israel on Gaza and the likelihood of a land assault. This level of military action is utterly disproportionate and will lead to ever-mounting numbers of civilian casualties."
