Prayer helped nurse survive kidnap ordeal

A nurse who was kidnapped and imprisoned in the boot of her car over Christmas, was helped to survive her ordeal through prayer, her brother said.

Magdeline Makola, 38, a cardiac nurse at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, was rescued by police in Airdrie, Scotland on Boxing Day. She had been missing for 11 days and was suffering from hypothermia and dehydration. But she is now making a good recovery.

Her brother Refilwe, who flew in from South Africa to be with Magdelene, said: "We never gave up hope. We are a Christian family, we were always praying together and members of the church came to pray with us. That's what kept us going."

Thanking everyone who helped find his sister, Refilwe said that prayer helped Magdeline get through her ordeal. He said: "She loves to go to church and loves her job with her whole heart. She loves people and always loves to help everyone. Ever since she was young she wanted to be a nurse." He added: "She is very strong and she is laughing now and starting to make some jokes."

A 35 year-old man appeared at Linlithgow Sheriff Court on 29 December, charged with the attempted murder of Magdeline. He will appear again tomorrow.
