CAFOD takes giant cow to Copenhagen

Campaigners will lead a giant cow puppet through the streets of Copenhagen tomorrow, to highlight how EU policies are Common Agriculture Policy is having a devastating impact on dairy farmers in the developing world. CAFOD, ActionAid, Oxfam International, and Danish NGO Ibis are organising the parade in the city centre. Setting off 12.30pm from Gammel Torv, just off the main shopping street of Copenhagen (the Stroget) it will make its way to the Town Square, Raadhuspladsen, where a huge milk carton will be installed, arriving at 1pm. During the parade, campaigners will be distributing sachets of EU milk powder to passers-by. EU citizens support the dairy industry to the tune of 16 billion euros per year - the equivalent of more than $2 per cow per day. This means that the average EU cow now receives more than the income of half the world's population. The organizations are calling on EU leaders at the summit to radically reform CAP and put an end to the dumping of key commodities on countries in the developing world.
