Liberia: missionary says 'for many - help is too late'

If peacekeeping forces do begin arriving in Monrovia today as promised - they will be too late for countless men, women and children who have already been killed or injured. Father Mauro Armanino, regional superior of the SMA (Society of Missionaries of Africa), told the Missionary News Service on Friday: "It will be too late for a young boy who bled to death from a gunshot wound. His father carried him all the way to the hospital to St Joseph's Hospital of Monrovia - but all they could do was hand his little body back to him. "They were one of the thousands of families fleeing from the eastern zone of the city", said Fr Mauro, "they were fleeing, while in other neighbourhoods people were out on the streets celebrating the arrival of the military representatives that are preparing the grounds for the deployment of a peace contingent." He said: "While this report restored the hopes of many, it was too late for one lifeless boy in his father's arms and for the hundreds of people buried along the beach of Monrovia." "It was too late for the girl and her mother who were raped, like many other women, by government militiamen." According to Fr Mauro, the people of Liberia will carry forever: "the indelible mark of the violence that has devastated the nation for years." Source: MISNA
