South African cardinal calls for sanctions against Zimbabwe
The head of the Catholic Church in South Africa, Cardinal Wilfred Napier said on Monday he could not understand why the South African government was not considering sanctions against Zimbabwe, given the success that sanctions brought to them. He clarified this by saying he believed any sanctions would need to be imposed "intelligently" and it should be up to the people of Zimbabwe to decide when they should be lifted. During the time of apartheid, he said, no progress was made with president PW Botha, and most churches supported the African National Congress's call for sanctions, through the United Democratic Front. "Sanctions in South Africa brought us a quicker end to the oppression. But I think you have got to do it intelligently," said Napier who is the president of the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference."
