Malawi: bishop dies 38 days after his consecration

The new Bishop for the Diocese of Mangochi, in Malawi, died suddenly on Tuesday, 8 March 2005, just 38 days after his ordination service.

A missionary priest told ICN that Bishop Luciano Nervi, 68, had been suffering from malaria. The funeral High Mass was due to be celebrated yesterday at St Augustine's Cathedral in Mangochi, presided over by the Bishop Emeritus of Mangochi, Mgr Assolari Alessandro with the head of the Episcopal conference of Malawi, Archbishop Tacisius Ziyaye giving the homily.

The president of Malawi, Bingu wa Mutharika was expected to attend the celebration.

Bishop Nervi worked in Malawi as a priest for Mangochi Diocese for 16 years- from 1970 to 1986. He worked at Utale II Parish as a parish priest and was also superior of the Montfort Delegation and vicar general of Mangochi Diocese. He returned to Italy in 1987 where among other duties he served as director of L'Apostolo di Maria, a Montfortian magazine.
