Thousands cheer Pope at Colosseum service

Thousands of people cheered the Pope when his image appeared in a giant screen during the Good Friday Way of the Cross evening service at the Colosseum yesterday. The Holy Father was shown sitting in his chapel at the Vatican with his back to the camera, watching the ceremony on a nearby television screen. John Paul sent a message to the crowd that was read by his vicar for Rome, Cardinal Camillo Ruini. In it, the Holy Father said he was spiritually among those at the Colosseum recalling Jesus' last hours. The ancient Roman amphitheatre was the place where many Christians were martyred during the persuctions of the early Church. Source: VIS
