Kenya: sisters lead environmental project

Catholic sisters in Kenya have taken the lead in efforts towards reforestation of this East African country, as the World Environment Day approaches. The Association of Sisterhoods of Kenya (AOSK) has been providing tree suitable seedlings to Kenyans jointly with other organizations. Srs Mary Frances LSSJ and Brenda Lung'atso MMS of the AOSK's Justice and Peace Desk have traversed more than ten districts in four provinces distributing close to 20,000 tree seedlings donated by environment-conscious organizations, among them Unilever, and Total Eco Challenge These activities will peak (but not end) with the World Environment Day celebrations scheduled for this Saturday. The official date is June 5, which this year falls on a Sunday. Sr Nuala Brangan CoJ from the Imara Centre, told the Catholic Information Serv ice Africa that the World Environment Day celebrations will be held at Nairobi's Arboretum Park, 10am-12noon. "We are encouraging people to celebrate the day on June 4," she said. The oil company Total Kenya which launched Total Eco Challenge in 2003, wants to develop each petrol station into a 'tree centre'.
