Vatican UN envoy calls for development that respects environment

"Development plans and strategies to reduce poverty must be integrated by environmental sustainability," said Monsignor Celestino Migliore, permanent observer of the Holy See at the United Nations, speaking at the 60th session of the UN General Assembly. "Responsibility and solidarity are connected in such a way that actions in favour of the environment become an affirmation of faith in the destiny of the human family meeting around a common project, which is crucial for the common good" he said, identifying in "economic and social challenges, including poverty, disease and environmental degradation" threats "to the security of present and future generations". Facing these themes, according to the Vatican observer, "local communities must be involved in the evaluation and preservation of nature and receive a just amount of the benefits if they accept to collaborate; the costs of the natural ecosystem must be considered in every economic decision because natural resources are clearly limited and to derive success, environmental protection must have a greater priority in the plans, in investments and in governments' budgets". Mgr Migliore described as 'encouraging' the growing perception of the importance of climate change demonstrated at the recent G8 summit in Gleneagles: "they have to follow serious arguments such that states might provide incentives for the additional development of renewable resources" he concluded.
