New book on school chaplaincy launched

School Ethos and Chaplaincy' was launched yesterday in Liverpool. This is the first book on Chaplaincy in secondary education since 'Wasting me in School' by Sister Mary McKeown RSCJ. This book aims to support the integration of chaplaincy into the whole life of the school and to encourage leadership to understand and build upon the potential it has to offer.

The Bishops of England and Wales have asked that each secondary school employs a school chaplain before the end of this decade. This book, in partnership with the CES guidelines, offers a way to develop a balanced chaplaincy in Catholic and ecumenical settings.

In his introduction, Bishop Brian Noble, Bishop of Shrewsbury, said: The worthwhile survival of our Catholic Schools depends on the continually renewed promotion of their Gospel-inspired ethos. In these pages Chaplains and would-be chaplains will find an affirmation of their contribution, a challenge to appreciate its scope, and much practical wisdom - hewn from experience - for implementation. Central to the author's purpose is the need for Chaplaincy to be dynamically owned by Senior Management. They alone can create the atmosphere in which it can flourish. All concerned with Catholic schooling will benefit from this vision. Read on!
