Mexico: ex-police commander sentenced for murder of Cardinal

A Mexican court has sentenced a former police commander, Humberto Rodriguez Banuelos, to 40 years in jail for the murder of Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo twelve years ago. Cardinal Ocampo and six others died in a hail of bullets when their car was attacked at Guadalajara airport in 1993. The court heard that Banuelos was part of a drugs gang which mistook the Cardinal's car for that of a rival trafficker. Rodriguez was arrested in 2001 for allegedly taking part in a shootout. Police could not confirm his identity for several months because he had undergone cosmetic surgery on his face, lost 40kg by liposuction and had hair implants. Twelve people have now been convicted over the attack on Cardinal Posadas. Church officials have long disputed the official version of events. A church spokesman said many believe Cardinal Ocampo was killed because he knew about alleged relationships between drug traffickers and politicians.
