Zimbabwe: New Bishop of Gweru named

Father Martin Munyanyi has been appointed the fourth bishop of Gweru Catholic Diocese. Bishop-elect Munyanyi, aged 50, is former rector of the major philosophical seminary of Bulawayo.

Pope Benedict XVI made the appointment on Thursday. The new bishop was born on January 3, 1956 and ordained a priest in 1983. Gweru Diocese, erected in 1955, has been vacant since the death of Bishop Francis Xavier Mugadzi in February 2004. It has 196,000 Catholics, served by 39 priests and 207 religious. Zimbabwe has eight dioceses. Hwange has been vacant since January 2004 when Bishop Robert Ndlovu was named archbishop of the capital, Harare. Source: CISA
