Kenya: road named after popular cardinal

The authorities in Nairobi yesterday renamed a major road in the east of the city after Cardinal Maurice Michael, who died in September 2003. Hundreds of Catholics from Kariobangi, led by their parish priest, Comboni Father Paulino Mondo, from Uganda, took part in special prayers during the mounting of the new road signs - replacing 'First Light Industries Road' with the name of the Cardinal. Fr Paulino said: "This is a great honour of our Cardinal, who loved the poor and committed his whole life to his priesthood." He added that Cardinal Michael often prayed with parishioners in the area at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Local Councillor for Kariobangi, Japheth Orony Bonyo said the local authority now plans to resurface the road. He said: "We intend to make this road, fitting the name behind it - His Eminence Cardinal Maurice Otunga", he told the hundreds of people, who had turned up to witness the occasion.
