Romania: priests and nuns protest at proposed high rise

About 200 Catholic priests and religious sisters staged a protest on Thursday over the planned construction of a huge office block which will overshadow Bucharest Cathedral. In a statement the Church authorities said the plans ignored the rights of the Catholic community and amounted to "an act of discrimination". They have also filed complaints with the European Commission and other European Union bodies The country's dominant Orthodox Church also published a statement condemning the construction of the high-rise. Built in the late 19th century, St Joseph Cathedral is considered one of Bucharest's finest remaining architectural sites - after former Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu wiped out large parts of the old city to build huge offices for himself. The Vatican has expressed concern over the development. Many local architects and civic groups, have said they fear structural damage to the cathedral and the alteration of the city's architectural landscape. The same developer has already built another high-rise next to the city's old Armenian church, another historical monument, which suffered damaged to its foundation. The company, Millennium, deny that their planned new development will harm St Joseph's.
