Six emergency medical centres opened in Gaza

Yesterday, Caritas Jerusalem inaugurated six new emergency medical centres in the Gaza Strip. The project, which is funded by CAFOD, began in response to the massive upsurge in violence in Gaza. During the last year, many parts of the Gaza Strip have witnessed aggressive Israeli incursions that caused many deaths and casualties. In such cases, it is difficult for ambulances to reach the injured. In addition, many of the targeted locations have no medical care facilities at all. The aim of this project is to partner with a local medical professional and a local municipality or other organization to provide a suitable location to position medical supplies and medicines to be used in the event that an emergency case arrives and immediate care is needed. In addition, the medical point is open one day per week on a regular schedule to help address ongoing medical needs in the targeted area. Local doctors volunteer to see patients in the medical points during this time. In coordination with the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Caritas has identified six communities where emergency medical facilities are not present and which are seriously marginalized in the health sector. The six selected locations are: Al-Bureij Camp, Maghazi Camp, Al-Mosaddar Area and Mughraqa (middle Gaza Strip), Beit Lahia (northern Gaza Strip) and the Al-Emoor region (southern Gaza Strip). Caritas Jerusalem worked with the Palestinian Ministry of Health and the targeted local communities to hold consultative meetings to identify the specific needs of the location where a medical point will be established. All parties were enthused by the idea and started to prepare a hygienic location to be used for the medical points. In addition, the benefiting Municipalities, Village Councils, youth centres and the volunteer doctors have signed an agreement with Caritas Jerusalem ensuring their commitment to the continuity of the medical points. Once the pilot project is completed, the medical points will be evaluated to assess the project's impact. Caritas Jerusalem is grateful to CAFOD, local municipalities, doctors, NGOs and all working on this project to give health care to seriously vulnerable communities.- Source: Caritas Jerusalem
