Consolata Missionaries open dispensary in Nairobi slum

Kenyan Vice-President, Moody Awori yesterday commended the Consolata Catholic missionaries for their work with people living in slums.

Officially opening a dispensary at the Deep Sea slums village within the Consolata Shrine Parish, Nairobi sponsored by the missionaries in close cooperation with an Italian NGO, Africa Rafiki, Mr Awori said by so doing the church was responding to the biblical teaching to care for the sick.

The Vice President assured the missionaries that the Government would provide a trained nurse and some drugs as part of her contributions to the 28,000 Euro project. He said that the Kenyan Government was committed to upgrading slums in urban centres, citing Nairobi's Kibera slums, where the Government in collaboration with the United Nations, is undertaking major upgrading work.

Earlier, while presiding over a Mass to mark the occasion, Father in Charge of Consolata Shrine Parish, Fr Marino Gemma said the project was part of its social concerns for the poor. He added that the parish was also committed to providing other services including water, schooling and sewerage. Fr Marino said the dispensary would be shared by residents of other slum dwellers of Suswa and Maasai villages.

Other people, who attended the occasion, included the regional superior of Consolata missionaries, Father Franco Cellana and country's assistant minister for Housing, Mrs Bett Tett.
