Kenya: new interfaith peace initiative launched

An interfaith peace initiative group was launched in Nairobi's Holy Family Minor Basilica yesterday, with the aim of contributing to peace making efforts led by the former UN general secretary, Kofi Annan . The Kenya Peace Initiative, which includes Christians and Muslims, is lead by a Catholic lay person, Augustine Njeru Gathangu. Speaking during the opening ceremony, Father James Maloba, Secretary to the Archbishop of the metropolitan archdiocese of Nairobi said the Kofi Annan team needed such local contribution to achieve its intended goals. Officially launching the group, renowned Nairobi lawyer, Patrice Lumumba said Kenyans must take responsibility for making peace. "One of the biggest mistakes we have committed is to imagine that this peace making business is solely the work of politicians. On the contrary, all of us must get involved. We must all own it as Kenyan people", he said.
