Candle of Hope appeal at Westminster Cathedral

On Christmas Eve, Westminster Cathedral will be starting a special memorial for those who have been lost to cancer.

The Candle of Hope appeal is being organised by World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and will start on December 24, with a memorial candle burning from Christmas Eve through to Twelfth Night.

The annual campaign is a way for people to remember the lives of lost friends and relatives as well as guiding the way toward a future free from cancer.

Teresa Nightingale, Head of Fundraising at WCRF, said: "At Christmas, the candle is a way for people to pray for those who have been lost to cancer.

"It is not just for those who have lost their lives but also for all those affected by cancer, those facing the illness, survivors of cancer and not forgetting, carers and loved ones.

"As well as the candle acting as a tribute, the appeal also offers hope - by rekindling our determination to work harder in our research and education programmes to help in the fight to prevent cancer."

World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) raises awareness that cancer is largely preventable and helps people make choices to reduce their chances of developing the disease. This includes research into how cancer risk is related to diet, physical activity, and weight management, and education programmes that highlight the fact that about a third of cancers could be prevented through changes to lifestyle. The WCRF report, called Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity, and the Prevention of Cancer: a Global Perspective, was launched in November 2007 and is the most comprehensive report ever published on the link between cancer and lifestyle. For more information, visit www.dietandcancerreport.org
