Teaching, catachetical resources for World AIDS Da

To mark World AIDS Day on 1 December, the Pattaya Orphanage Trust has put together a film, a reading and lesson plan, based on their own work with HIV positive orphans in Thailand.

One of the difficulties of working in this field is challenging the fear and prejudice surrounding the virus. It is particularly hard for children, who can find themselves rejected by their family, school and community. Father Giovanni and Father Mike, who run centres for AIDS orphans in north Thailand not only give children life-saving medication, an education and a home. They also give them the self-confidence they need to face the world and build themselves a future.

Educating ourselves and others is key to breaking down the prejudice around HIV/AIDS. Fr Giovanni and Fr Mike have contributed to this easy-to-use and sensitive lesson plan which could be used as a lesson plan or part of a catachetical programme or . The film Living Positive can be enjoyed on its own, or as part of a lesson plan.

There is also a first-hand account of life with the virus, written by an 11 year old girl which could be used as part of a homily.
