Play: A Monk’s Tale: Relics, Reform and Revolution
Luther, the mad monk… “No, he wasn’t mad.” “Well, he was very angry!”
Confused/bemused about Luther? Good for us/bad for us? A cultural disaster? A reform which went wrong – or went right?
You will certainly not go wrong if you spend an hour at 'A Monk’s Tale: Relics, Reform and Revolution' touring the UK now after a near sell-out three weeks in Edinburgh.
You’d better believe that in 60 minutes of unbelievably energetic songs, dancing, sketches, lectures, it is possible to cover the history of church, why Peter was a key character (geddit?) in the story, how and why Luther got into trouble, but avoided it, courtesy of the relic-wielding Frederick The Wise, the role of social media (pamphlets) in propagating his revolution, and why we are all so mixed up (one church, one faith, one Lord??).
A brilliant piece, performed by three fab young professionals, making this show by writer James Cary (Miranda and much else for BBC TV and Radio) a worthy commemoration/celebration that it’s 500 years since Luther’s famous/infamous nailing of those 95 theses on the door at Wittenberg:
OR DID HE?
