  • Father John Buckley

A Dream Unfolds - The Story of Nano Nagle by Noela Fox, published by The Columba Press.

Nano Nagle is the epitome of modernity. She was a colossus who was ahead of her time. We are privileged to inhabit an epoch when, through the rapid evolution of the feminine, human progress is undergoing radical transformation. After millennia of suppression the emergence of woman is enriching humanity beyond measure.

If we examine any aspect of human endeavour: be it science, medicine, education, politics, economics, sport, we find woman reaching the highest levels of achievement. The power of social engineering that belongs to the feminine, has immense implications for global spirituality.

Nano Nagle fought against one of the great evils of her time. The Penal Laws were Orwellian in their content. Control the mind and erase selective memory and you control society. The aim in this was to eliminate the Roman Catholic Faith (Popery as it was called). The principal implement in this was-no Roman Catholic schools.

Through her lively Roman Catholic faith, her brilliant mind, her light-filled vison, her deep humanity, Nano Nagle won. On this journey Nano had also to contend with a suspicious Roman Catholic Hierarchy. After all! she was a very strong minded woman who wanted to educate women, especially those poor or marginalised.

This short novel by Noela Fox is well researched and tastefully written. It provides an incentive for further study of Nano Nagle and the Ireland of her time. Hopefully it will inspire present and future generations to get to know Nano Nagle more. A woman who suffered much because she loved much.
