Birmingham: Small Footsteps - interfaith green workshops for kids

Birmingham's faith groups have come together to launch Small Footsteps 2017 - a week of indoor and outdoor hands-on eco workshops for the City's youngsters. Featured on BBC Radio, the unique Small Footsteps initiative for kids from 10 to 15 years starts Monday 31st July at Fircroft College, Selly Oak. Due to generous donations, this exciting opportunity is free - but remaining spaces are limited and time for registration is short.

The City's faith groups have put aside historic divides and come together on a new initiative to inspire our young people to love our shared natural world. Developed through the Birmingham Council of Faiths, the ground-breaking programme includes engaging activities to excite and challenge young people.

Based on a well regarded pilot in 2016, the programme has been further improved to include:

• hands-on experience with animals from around the world,
• imaginative responses to climate change at home and across the globe,
• creating tasty meals from junk-food and
• outdoor forest school ventures

Staffed by a team of committed accredited volunteers and professional trainers from across Birmingham's cultures, the Small Footsteps programme runs each day from next Monday 31st July to Friday 4th August 8.30m to 3.45pm. Coach transport is provided from Birmingham Central Mosque or young people can arrive direct at Fircroft, Selly Oak. Registration is vital to ensure a place.

"We have a programme of exciting interactive events for older children and young teenagers - all inspired by a love for our natural world in Birmingham" said Steve Baines, a member of Footsteps - Birmingham Faiths for a low-carbon future.

"This shows that Birmingham faiths can all pull together to creatively meet the challenges affecting our children and future generations" said Shabana Parveen, a volunteer leader.
