New York: Hiroshima commemoration; celebration of anti-nuclear treaty


On Sunday, 6 August, 2017, Pax Christi Metro New York, will commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with a memorial prayer; a presentation by Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, on the newly adopted landmark global agreement to ban nuclear weapons; and a silent procession and “Vigil for Life Free from Nuclear Weapons.”

Mr Granoff is an international lawyer who serves as a Senior Advisor and Special Representative to the United Nations for the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates. He is the Chair of the Task Force on Nuclear Nonproliferation of the International Law Section of the American Bar Association and Ambassador for Peace, Security and Nuclear Disarmament of the Parliament of the World’s Religions. He focuses his advocacy efforts on the legal, moral, political and spiritual dimensions of peace with a particular emphasis on the rule of law and the elimination of nuclear weapons. He also serves on numerous advisory and governing boards including the NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security at the UN; Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy; and Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament. He has testified as an expert in the US Congress, Parliaments of the UK and Canada, and at the UN. In 2014, Mr Granoff was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Following Mr Granoff’s presentation there will be time for discussion before the silent procession to Fr Demo Square and a brief solemn vigil.

This Memorial begins at 20 Washington Square North, Sunday, 6 August at 2.30p,. The Memorial will end at 4.30pm at the Square.

Because of the prayerful nature of the procession, participants are asked not to bring any signs or banners.
