Afghanistan: Christian aid worker killed

Afghanistan: Christian aid worker killed

A 34 year-old woman working for a Christian charity helping disabled Afghans was shot dead by the Taliban in Kabul early this morning.

Gayle Williams, an employee at SERVE Afghanistan, was gunned down by two men on a motorcycle as she walked alone in the west of the city.

The Taliban are reported to have said they killed her because she was working for a Christian organisation. An eyewitness said two men on a motorbike drew alongside her. One man then got off the motorbike and shot her at close range before jumping back on the bike and escaping. Children on the street going to school also saw the incident.

In a statement on its website SERVE Afghanistan said: "She was a person who always loved the Afghans and was dedicated to serving those who are disabled. Needless to say we are all in shock."

"SERVE Afghanistan's purpose is to express God's love and bring hope by serving the people of Afghanistan, especially the needy, as we seek to address personal, social and environmental needs," the site says.
