London concert: Nakba – Songs of Exile

Amos Trust in association with PalmusicUK presents Nakba – Songs of Exile next Monday, (Nakba Day) in the Priory Church of St John, Clerkenwell, London.

The concert features singers from The Tallis Scholars singing 'Lamentations of Jeremiah' by Robert White, 'Funeral Ikos' by John Tavener and 'Beatitudes' by Arvo Part. The evening will also feature Clara Sanabras and Harvey Brough playing songs of Spanish exile; Kareem Samara & Yara Salahideen playing Arabic songs of homeland and exile and Julia Katarina playing songs of exile from East and West.

This is a year of major anniversaries for the Palestinian struggle – the tenth year of the blockade of Gaza, fiftieth year of the Occupation and the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. The Priory Church of the Order of St John, Clerkenwell, was built in the 12th century by the Knights of St John in emulation of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The Priory Church and Museum maintain links to this day with Jerusalem through their support for the St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group in Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank.
