Festival to focus on Sacred Spaces in London

  • Ellen Teague

The Waterloo Festival 2017 will run throughout June. It is taking as its theme 'Sacred Spaces' and asks, what makes a space sacred?

Richard Slater's stunning photographs will shine the light on London's many and varied faith communities and places of worship. A celebration of faith and sacred space in the world's global city, the images will be on display in the main church of St John's, Waterloo in June.

Acclaimed Macedonian artist Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva's installations will transform the space in the crypt of St John's. To complement the shows, Endangered Spaces invites audiences into a discussion on Christian-Muslim relations in a divided world.

Fresh visions continue with an immersive, one-day Eco-Poetry Festival, curated by by the ground-breaking poet Jay Ramsay. Can poetry save the planet? There will also be new poetry by local poets Southwark Stanza, including a specially commissioned poem by Seamus Heaney Prizewinner Kate Miller.

Sacred Space takes on a floral dimension on 16 June, with a Sustainable Flower Festival. Expect a transformed St John’s, filled with flower stations fashioned by renowned florists. Meanwhile, the Rambert Dance Company and Voices of Waterloo will perform specially commissioned works; the latter commemorating the women who, legend has it, rebuilt the Waterloo Bridge.

Music is a key feature, curated by musical director Euchar Gravina. There will be a radical new approach to concerts by the Southbank Sinfonia, inviting the audience to be surrounded by the orchestra as they play Bruckner’s 4th Symphony.
