COMPETITION

A major retrospective dedicated to the great filmmaker Martin Scorsese, is taking place at the British Film Institute on London's South Bank this January and February.

Highlights of the season include screenings of films from the director's back catalogue, including The Age of Innocence, with classics Goodfellas and Taxi Driver each getting cinema re-releases. Many films, shown accompanied by brand new 4K restorations and a collection of films - personally curated by Scorsese himself - will premiere as part of the celebration.

Another highlight will be a concert screening of Taxi Driver starring Robert De Niro with Bernard Hermann's score performed live by the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Among themes explored are Scorsese's Italian American influences, New York and his iconic music films including his Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones documentaries.

Stuart Brown, BFI Head of Programme and Acquisitions said: "Martin Scorsese's contribution to cinema is unique and unparalleled; not only is he is one of America's finest filmmakers with a remarkable body of work, but he has also, through his non-profit organisation, Film Foundation, brought back to life many classics of world cinema that might otherwise have disappeared from view. Scorsese's own films are formally inventive, original in style, expertly cast, full of insight and highly entertaining. The BFI are thrilled to be bringing them back to the big screen where they belong."

One of the most influential filmmakers of his generation, Scorsese is a committed Catholic. Born to Italian parents in New York he served and as altar boy and attended a junior seminary for a short time. Many of his films deal with issues of faith, religion and morality. One part of the retrospective is dedicated to these themes with a talk on The Catholic Imagination of Martin Scorsese by a film scholar from King's College and screenings of several of his films dealing with faith issues.
