US Comboni Sisters campaign against death penalty
Religious leaders from across the State of Virginia gathered at the statehouse yesterday (Monday 18 April) to urge lawmakers to reject a secrecy amendment added to the 'electric chair' bill by Governor Terry McAuliffe. All faith leaders who spoke during the conference share a common belief that the death penalty is wrong and ineffective.
Sister Ilaria a Comboni Missionary Sister who was one of the speakers said: "There is no valid path or less gruesome way to deliver the death penalty. There is no good way to kill someone. We celebrated Easter some weeks ago. A we celebrate renewal; let us reflect where we want our government to be in the business of killing. After all, Christians believe in Jesus who suffered execution by the state and preached forgiveness."
