Bishop Lang hopes for 'genuinely free society' in Myanmar after landmark election result

Bishop Declan Lang, Chair of the Bishops' International Affairs department, has reaffirmed their support for those in Myanmar (Burma) who have worked tirelessly to promote peace and civil liberties, in light of the landmark election victory for Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) Party.

He said: "This is a time of great hope, for a nation that has suffered far too long. The opportunity for so many of Myanmar's people to participate in their political system and the election of a government committed to democratic reform are welcome signs of a brighter future. Nonetheless, now is not a time for complacency. As we celebrate this historic moment we must also reaffirm our support for all those in Myanmar working to promote peace, champion civil liberties, advance the rights of ethnic or religious minorities, and build a genuinely free society.

"The Catholic Church's work is central to this and I am sincerely looking forward to welcoming Cardinal Bo when he visits England next year."
