His Excellency Mr Daniel Mulhall, the Irish Ambassador to Britain, is to deliver a guest lecture at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham, exploring the work of Irish playwright Sean O’Casey later this month.

Hosted by the University College’s Centre for Irish Studies on Tuesday, 28 January, His Excellency will deliver the lecture, ‘O’Casey and the Drama of History’, to students, staff and members of the public interested in the topic at 6pm in the Waldegrave Drawing Room.

Irish dramatist Sean O’Casey was renowned for his plays depicting Dublin during the revolution and civil war and the talk will explore his work and the relationship between drama and narratives of history.

Ambassador Mulhall was born in Ireland in 1955, joining the Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland in 1978 and has held positions in the Department’s Economic, Political, Development Cooperation and Press Sections. Among his interests are Irish history and literature, having published many articles and the book A New Day Dawning: A Portrait of Ireland in 1900 (Cork, 1999).

The lecture is free and open to the public starting at 6pm at St Mary’s Strawberry Hill campus. To book your place, please contact Wendy Bushnell on wendy.bushnell@smuc.ac.uk.
