London: Archbishop Trevor Huddleston centenary celebrations

“No white person has done more than Trevor Huddleston in the struggle against apartheid,” Nelson Mandela.

St Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square is hosting events to honour the Centenary of Archbishop Trevor Huddleston’s birth this month. A photographic exhibition, ‘A life called to Justice and Freedom – Father Trevor Huddleston’, opened on 15 June, and a thanksgiving service will be held on Saturday, 29 June at 11am. The service will include tributes to and the legacy of Archbishop Huddleston by Fr Nicolas Stebbing, Community of the Resurrection, and Baroness Glenys Kinnock. It is organised with Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA) – the successor organisation to the Anti-Apartheid Movement - and the Johannesburg-based Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre.

St Martin’s has a long and cherished relationship with communities in South Africa, in and outside church circles. In particular it has supported training programmes at the Huddleston Memorial Centre over many years, and hosts the Living South Africa Memorial sculpture, unveiled in 1994 by Archbishop Desmond Tutu to remember all those who lost lives and suffered in the violence and injustice of the apartheid years. Trevor Huddleston made a huge impression on a then young Desmond Tutu when as a white priest he raised his hat in deference and greeting to Desmond Tutu’s mother Anglican Archbishop Huddleston was a frequent preacher and campaigner on the steps of St Martin’s, close to the then South African Embassy. He guided and inspired thousands of people in Britain and beyond to campaign for democracy, dignity, equality and rights. As South Africa prepares to mark 20 years of freedom from apartheid, the role that Trevor Huddleston and others played is being celebrated.

‘Trevor Huddleston - A life called to Justice and Freedom’ Photographic Exhibition 15 June – 20 July 2013 is located in the crypt of St Martin’s and the entrance is via the glass pavilion to the left of the church. Admission is free but please visit the St Martin’s website www.smitf.org for opening times.

The Service of Thanksgiving is on Saturday 29 June 2013 at 11am. All are welcome. Register at info@actsa.org
