ICN arrives on Facebook

An Independent Catholic News group has been set up on Facebook. The page will carry notices and comments and there is room for members to take part in discussion forums.

ICN is just one of the latest Catholic organisations to start using this popular social network website. Over the weekend the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) set up a page on Facebook to promote their Faithful Citizenship resources in preparation for the presidential elections in November. Other recent arrivals have been: Thinking Faith, First Sunday, Sunday Plus, CAFOD, numerous publications, Catholic charities and campaigning groups.

Facebook was started by Harvard undergraduate Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. Membership was initially limited to Harvard students, but was soon expanded to include a much wider audience. According to comScore, it is now the leading social networking site based on monthly unique visitors. ComScore reports that Facebook attracted 132.1 million unique visitors in June 2008, compared to its nearest competitor MySpace, which attracted 117.6 million.
