Lecture series on Blessed Cardinal Newman

Blessed John Henry Newman

Blessed John Henry Newman

Blessed John Henry Newman is the focus of 'Faith Matters', a series of four evening lectures to be held at Westminster Cathedral Hall, London SW1 in November and December 2010.

Following the Beatification of Cardinal Newman by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the United Kingdom in September, 'Faith Matters' will explore why Newman is a figure of such immense significance for Church and society.

Dr Judith Champ, Director of Studies and Lecturer in Church History at Oscott College, the seminary for the Archdiocese of Birmingham, will deliver the first 'Faith Matters' lecture at 7pm on Tuesday 2 November 2010 at Westminster Cathedral Hall, London SW1.

The theme of her lecture is 'Cardinal Newman: a Man for our Times.' Dr Champ will set Newman in his historical context and explore what it meant for Newman to make the choices and decisions he did and what effect that process had on him and on English Catholicism.

The other three 'Faith Matters' lectures, which all start at 7pm at Westminster Cathedral Hall, London SW1, are:

* Fr James Pereiro on 'Newman on Faith and Reason' on 16 November
* Fr John McDade on 'Newman on Christ and the Church' on 30 November
* Fr Daniel Seward on 'Newman and Friendship' on 14 December

Speaking about Cardinal Newman on the eve of his trip to the United Kingdom, Pope Benedict XVI said: "It is my hope and prayer that more and more people will benefit from his gentle wisdom and be inspired by his example of integrity and holiness of
life."

Faith Matters is a joint initiative by the Diocese of Westminster's Agency for Evangelisation and the Mount Street Jesuit Centre.

'Faith Matters' lectures are open to all but registration is required to guarantee a place. To book a place please email faithmatters@rcdow.org.uk or telephone 020 7931 6078

Video recordings of the Newman 'Faith Matters' lectures and an online discussion forum will be available at www.rcdow.org.uk/faithmatters
