New head appointed to Vatican office for Religious

The Vatican yesterday announced that Pope Benedict has named US Redemptorist Father Joseph W Tobin as secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.

Fr Tobin, 58, will help manage the more than 300 orders around the world. He led the 5300-strong Redemptorist order from 1991 to 2009. During that time he also served as vice president of the Union of Superiors General and, for the last eight years of his term, was a member of the special council for relations between the union and the congregation for religious. He will be taking over from Archbishop Gianfranco Agostino Gardin of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor

Archbishop-designate Tobin was born on 3 May, 1952, in Detroit. He made perpetual vows as a Redemptorist in 1976 and was ordained a priest two years later. He has been a member of the Canon Law Society of America since 1985.
