UK-wide events to commemorate Hiroshima, Nagasaki

The 65th anniversaries of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki take on August 6 and 9. A number of vigils, exhibitions, walks and prayer services will be taking take place around the UK to mark the event. Some of the main ones are detailed. LONDON

A exhibition organised by CND, Religious Society of Friends and Hiroshima Peace Museum: After the Bomb Dropped: How Hiroshima and Nagasaki Suffered Exhibition will take place at Friends House Quaker Centre, 173 Euston Road, London NW1 2BJ,Euston Road between 10 am – 5.30 pm daily from 2-12 August.

On 2 August, CND chair Kate Hudson and Quaker Carolyn Westgate discuss the legacy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the development of the peace movement at Friends House from 7pm till 8pm.

On 3 August, A-bomb survivor Shoso Kawamoto will talk to south London CND groups about his experience of surviving the atomic destruction of August 1945. Charlton House Public Library, Charlton Road, Greenwich, London SE7 8RE, 6pm till 10pm.

Also on 3 August, there will be a screening of two short films: Children of Nagasaki and On a Paper Crane, about the bombings from a child's perspective. These are at Friends House 2pm till 3.30pm.

On 4 August, Mr Kawamoto will speak about his experience at Muswell Hill Quaker Meeting House, Church Crescent, London N10 3NE, 7pm till 9pm.

On 5 August Mr Kawamoto will be speaking at Tower Hamlets CND. St Paul's Church, Bow Common, Burdett Road, Tower Hamlets, E3 4TN, 7.30pm till 9.20pm.

On 6 August, Pax Christi is holding a Hiroshima Day Vigil in the Piazza, Westminster Cathedral, from 10am – 5pm (with prayers at 11.30am and 3pm). To volunteer help contact the office 0208 203 4884

On 9 August, Nagasaki Day, there will be a gathering at Friends House, Euston Road, at 4pm, organised by Christian CND and Pax Christi to visit the Hiroshima Exhibition. This will be followed by a vigil in Friends House Garden and a walk to Westminster Cathedral from 5 - 6.30pm.

On 9 August the Annual Franz Jägerstätter Commemoration Service, London will be held in the Crypt Chapel, Westminster Cathedral (via Ambrosden Avenue car park, behind Cathedral) at 6.30pm, followed by interfaith peace walk to Battersea Peace Pagoda for the Nagasaki Day ceremony.

Also on 9 August, Dr Christopher Gerteis, lecturer in the history of contemporary Japan, SOAS, on life in Hiroshima and Nagasaki before and after the atomic bombings at Friends House 7pm till 8pm.

On 10 August there will be a film screening of Hiroshima Witness: Survivors of Hiroshima describe their experiences at Friends House 2pm till 4pm.

On 11 August, Fire from the sky - an event for children (5+) on the story of Hiroshima and resistance to war takes place at Friends House from 2pm till 4pm.

KENT

August 6th 8.20pm for one hour -Hiroshima and Nagasaki Commemoration For the past 25 years the Kent Justice & Peace Group have organised a commemoration service at Aylesford Priory to mark the anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb in 1945. Refreshments will be available after the Service. All are welcome. For information call John Caruana 01634 864179

ABINGDON

Abingdon Hiroshima Week takes place from 2 - 7 August in the Community Shop in Abingdon Shopping Precinct. Organised by local Pax Christi members and the Abingdon Peace Group, there will be an exhibition using posters from the Peace Museum in Hiroshima, paper crane making (the aim is to make 1000 in the Week); opportunities to send messages of friendship to the people of Hiroshima, information and petition about Trident and also a petition in support of Mayors for Peace. Japanese tea and snacks will be provided and served by local Japanese residents.

On 5 August, there will be a visit from two Hiroshima residents on their way to Coventry for Hiroshima Day.

On 6 August, at the time of the dropping of the Hiroshima bomb, there will be a silent Vigil at the War Memorial.

COVENTRY
