New altar at London Oratory in honour of Cardinal Newman

London Oratory Church

London Oratory Church

A new altar is being built in the Church of the London Oratory, South Kensington, in London, in honour of John Henry Cardinal Newman, and in thanksgiving for his Beatification which will take place in Birmingham on 19 September.

Cardinal Newman founded the Birmingham Oratory in February 1848. He then asked Father Wilfrid Faber to establish the London Oratory in May, 1849.

The new altar will be blessed at a special Mass of Thanksgiving on Wednesday, 22 September. Designed by the Oratory's architect, Russell Taylor, the altar will be made of stone and scagliola.

The words to be carved on the altar's gradine are from Newman's funeral plaque at the Birmingham Oratory. They read: EX UMBRIS ET IMAGINIBUS IN VERITATEM (OUT OF SHADOWS AND IMAGES INTO THE TRUTH)

The cost of this new altar will be £109,020. If you would like to make a contribution, please send donations to: The Provost, The Oratory, Brompton Road, London, SW7 2RP. Cheques: 'London Oratory Charity'.
