Vatican to investigate Medjugorje

The Vatican has formed a commission to investigate the apparitions in Medjugorje, Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Vatican press office said in a statement on Wednesday: "An international investigative commission on Medjugorje has been constituted, under the presidency of Cardinal Camillo Ruini and dependent upon the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith."

This commission made up of cardinals, bishops, specialists and experts will work privately, submitting the results of its work to the authority of the dicastery, the statement said.

Medjugorje, is a small village 20 kilometres from Mostar. In 1981, six children said they had seen the Blessed Virgin on a nearby hill.

Since that time, the visionaries claim to have experienced hundreds of visions of Our Lady and regularly convey messages they say they have received from her. Medjugorje has become a popular pilgrimage centres attracting more than 15 million people and devotees worldwide.

In April 1991, the bishops conference of the then Yugoslavia were unable to reach a conclusion about the apparitions. Father Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office said that the bishops of Bosnia and Herzegovina had requested that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome take over the investigation.
