New policy director for Traidcraft

Paul Spray

Paul Spray

Paul Spray, currently a Deputy Director at the Department for International Development, is to be Traidcraft's new Director of Policy.

Bringing more than thirty years' experience of international development, he will head a team that has been at the forefront of advocacy and campaigning work on trade justice and corporate accountability issues in recent years.

Traidcraft Chief Executive Paul Chandler said: "Paul joins us at a time when Traidcraft's policy reputation is higher than ever, and we are acknowledged as the only UK charity that focuses exclusively on trade issues. With his extensive experience both in government and the international development sector, Paul's appointment will add even more momentum to the growth and impact of this important team."

Paul said: "I am delighted to be joining such a vital and successful organisation. I have been a supporter of Traidcraft for a long time. I believe its mission of fighting poverty through trade is absolutely central to effective development, and I look forward to taking its work forward over the years ahead.

Paul's roles at DFID included Head of Research, Head of DFID Nigeria, and Head of the Latin America and Caribbean department. Before joining DFID he was Head of Aid and then Policy and Campaigns Director of Christian Aid. He has also headed the Southern Africa desk for the Catholic Institute of International Relations.

Paul is married and lives in Oxford. He is a member of the Wesley Memorial Methodist Church and is currently training as a lay preacher.

He will take up his post shortly, succeeding Mike Gidney who left Traidcraft after eight years to become Deputy Director of the Fairtrade Foundation.

Using Traidcraft's unique experience as both a trading company and a development charity, its policy team has played a leading role in multi-agency campaigns on trade justice and corporate accountability, as well as providing inputs into the development of fair and ethical trading practices.

Recent campaigns include pressing for a supermarkets ombudsman, and for more fair trade in the tea industry, as well as work on European trade agreements with India and other countries in Africa and Caribbean.
