Students considering studying for a degree in Theology are set to receive a helping hand with the launch of three new annual scholarships at Newman University College, Birmingham. The scholarships, which are funded by The Fernham Trust, will be awarded annually from 2010 and both full tuition fees scholarships and partial bursaries are available.

In order to apply for one of the scholarships, students must have accepted a place at Newman University College Birmingham to study for either a single honours degree in Theology for Education or to study Theology as a major or joint component of a combined honours degree.

Commenting on the funding, Dr Susan Docherty, Head of Theology and Combined Honours Programme Leader at Newman University College, said: “With student finance never far from the headlines and always of great concern to students, I’m delighted to be able to launch these new scholarships and am grateful to all at The Fernham Trust for their support.

“Widening access to higher education is fundamental to our ethos at Newman, with most students studying at the University College receiving some kind of financial support from the institution to do so.

“I very much hope that these new scholarships will enable promising students to pursue their dreams of exploring this challenging and valuable subject area and look forward to receiving the applications in due course.”

Anyone wishing to apply for one of the scholarships should e-mail Dr Susan Docherty on info#theology@newman.ac.uk. Applications and expressions of interest are welcomed from both potential students applying to study at Newman University College from 2010 onwards or those currently in their first year of study.

Newman University College is a Catholic higher education institution based in Bartley Green, Birmingham and enjoys one of the highest graduate employment rates of any higher education institution in the country.

Founded in 1968, Newman was awarded University College status in 2007, giving it the power to confer its own degrees. With a strong reputation for teacher training, the college also offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and foundation degree courses covering a range of subjects, primarily in the fields of humanities and social sciences.
