Faith groups respond together to economic crisis

Church Action on Poverty has announced a series of regional events to help churches and other faith groups respond to the recession and economic crisis.

The organisers say: "The recession will have profound impacts on families, communities, jobs, housing, financial services and wider economies for years to come. Faith communities often provide direct support to those who are worst affected. We can also offer a vision of how things could be done differently, and how we could use this opportunity to close the appalling gap between the UK's richest and poorest people. The churches have rich resources to draw on in responding to these challenges."

Church Action on Poverty's roundtable events are open to all, and are being organised in conjunction with a wide range of partner organisations. Each one will be based upon a different theme. They will explore the insights to be gained by revisiting the churches' previous work, develop new ideas and approaches, and provide a forum for people
to share stories and ideas from their own situations. Each event will feature high-profile keynote speakers who are experts in the themes being discussed.

The following events are planned:

* Faithful cities in a time of economic crisis, 21 September, Manchester

* Homes or assets? Restoring faith in housing, 20 October, Bristol

* Acts 4:35 - a strategy for our time? 21 October, Birmingham

* Redefining prosperity, 14 November, Sheffield

* Unemployment and the future of work, 17 November, London

* Ethics and finance after the crisis, 23 November, Leeds

* Developing our communities: patterns of empowerment, 2 December, Newcastle
