Summer events mark Hiroshima and Nagasaki


Many peace events are taking place in August around the UK and Ireland to mark the anniversary of the first atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some are listed alphabetically below.

AYLESFORD
On 6 August, at 8.20pm there will be an Annual Remembrance for Hiroshima and Nagasaki at Aylesford Priory, in the Relic Chapel, (with refreshments available afterwards) The event has been organised by: Kent Diocesan Area Justice & Peace Group.

COVENTRY
A Hiroshima Day Commemoration will take place on 6 August in the Chapel of Unity, Coventry Cathedral from 6 - 7 pm This will be a time of quiet reflection, music, poetry, readings and silence. All welcome. Contact Penny Walker on 02476 664616 for more information.

DERBY
A Hiroshima Day vigil will take place at 4pm on 6 August, in the place where where fuel rods to power Trident are made - The Rolls Royce factory in Raynesway, Derby. For more details contact: nottinghamjp@yahoo.co.uk

KNOCK, CO MAYO, IRELAND
Knock Peace Academy takes place from 9 - 13 August - an opportunity to pray, reflect, share and be inspired.

Speakers include: Nuala O'Loan, roving ambassador and special envoy for conflict resolution, East Timor, Fr Alex Reid, facilitator of the IRA ceasefire & NI peace process, Rev Ruth Patterson, director of Restoration Ministries, Sean O'Boyle, Glencree Centre for Reconciliation. LONDON
In London there will be a Pax Christi stall and prayers in the Piazza by Westminster Cathedral from 10am – 5pm on 6 August anniversary of Hiroshima and 10am – 4pm on 9 August, the anniversary of Nagasaki. Prayers are at 11.30 and 3pm on both days. If you are able to give time to help on either day contact Sr Mary Ann at the Pax Christi office on 0208 203 4884

At 5pm, on 9 August, the Annual Memorial Service for Blessed Franz Jägerstätter will take place at Holy Apostles RC Church, Winchester Street, Pimlico. This is followed by inter-faith pilgrimage to Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park.

READING TO ALDERMASTON INTERFAITH PEACE PILGRIMAGE

The Inter-faith pilgrimage for Peace takes place on 8 August. Walkers will be meeting at 9am outside Reading civic Centre. Arrive at Aldermaston for Inter-faith service at 4pm
