Day to explore children's mental health issues

Health, education and child-care professionals are invited to an open day at Bishop Harvey Family Service in Muswell Hill, to find out more about the psychotherapeutic services on offer and to meet the team.

Peter Wilson, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and co-founder of YoungMinds, a mental health charity for children and young people, will be talking on “The Children We Have” during the open day on Monday 22 June 2009 from 12-2.30pm.

Peter will be exploring the increase in mental health problems amongst children and the pressures placed upon them by modern society, highlighting the need for more services for children and families suchas those offered by the Bishop Harvey Family Service.

Patsy Ryz, the coordinator of the service explains that “since 1994, over 1,000 children and families have benefited from our unique early intervention service. As we do not have a waiting list, we can
intervene at an early stage before a child’s mental health problem becomes entrenched and more difficult to resolve. In at least one London Borough, the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service has a waiting time of up to 18 months—an incredibly long time in the life of a child.”
