St Albans: school breaks records fundraising for CAFOD

Source: CAFOD

Twenty three students from St Columba's School in St Albans took part in a 40km cycle ride recently, to raise money for CAFOD. The event was one of many organised by students at the school. Year eleven students Mathew Ball and Charlie Hunter explain:

"We came up with the idea of fund-raising for CAFOD because we wanted to get involved in charity work through the school. So we told our RE teacher, Mr Jones. He got straight on the phone and set up a meeting with a local group. Three of us went to Cockfosters and discussed ideas with the CAFOD team there. After the meeting we decided to set up a CAFOD group at school, which would be run by Form 5 students. It has been nearly a year now since we began the campaign and we are edging ever closer to our grand target of £15,000, which would be the most ever raised by a school for CAFOD.

We have done lots of different fundraising events. To start the ball rolling we went out on a street campaign in St Albans during our lunchtimes, raising nearly £1,700 in one intensive week. We then went to our local church, St Bartholomew's, where we talked about CAFOD issues to parishioners and raised £2,000. We raised some money during annual school fayre and collected money at school Masses in term time. Also, our Prep school and lower school gave out little collection boxes to students raising over £2,000 in coins. Counting the money was no easy task.

Other fund-raising events including a disco, a 40k sponsored bike ride (pictured) and bag packing at Sainsbury's. We hope to raise a further £5,000. We have learnt a lot about the work CAFOD does and fund-raising - some of our ideas have been better than others. On behalf of all students and staff at St Columba's we would like to thank everyone that has helped or donated to the campaign, We can not wait to hand over the cheque to CAFOD so they can make good use of the money raised!

(Year 11)

Tony Sheen CAFOD's manager in the Westminster Diocese expressed his gratitude to the St Columba's students for both their enthusiasm and hard work to help their brothers and sisters in the developing world. CAFOD works in partnership with in the poor in Africa, Asia and Latin America tackling poverty and injustice.
