Australia: World Youth Day coins and stamps launched - 4 March 2008

At a special ceremony yesterday, the Perth Mint presented Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, the official World Youth Day Sydney 2008 commemorative coins.

The event at St Mary's Cathedral House also marked the release of Australia Post's Special Event WYD08 stamps, including one domestic stamp and two international stamps using imagery of Pope Benedict XVI in the design as a symbolic representation of WYD08 in Australia. The stamps will be in circulation from today at participating Australia Post outlets.

Sydney will host the 23rd World Youth Day from 15-20 July with up to 125,000 international visitors expected to attend. The event marks Pope Benedict's first visit to Australia.

"The Perth Mint is delighted to present His Eminence with our Vatican-approved 1oz Gold Proof Coin and a 1oz Silver Proof Coin," said Mint director Ed Harbuz.

"World Youth Day is a momentous occasion in the history of Australia and the Catholic Church and we hope that our range of commemorative coins will help to keep the memory alive for years to come," he said.

The limited mintage coins each depict the Pope, the WYD08 logo and the inscription 'World Youth Day Sydney 2008' on the reverse.

Cardinal Pell also welcomed the release of Australia Post's range of WYD08 stamps and related products. The range will include a strictly limited number of gold and silver-coated WYD08 stamps, the first stamps of their kind to be produced by Australia Post for an event.

"Australia Post is proud to unveil the WYD08 stamps and to offer people around the world another medium through which to share their faith and excitement about the upcoming WYD08 event," said Australia Post Philatelic Group Manager, Noel Leahy.

Today's presentation of the WYD08 commemorative coins and stamps follows the previous announcements of Australia Post (December 2007) and Perth Mint (January 2008) as official WYD08 licensees.

Coins can be purchased from The Perth Mint www.perthmint.com.au or freecall 1800 098 817, reputable coin dealers and selected Australia Post outlets.

Australia Post's WYD08 stamps will be available from tomorrow at www.auspost.com.au/wyd and at all Australia Post stores nationwide.
