Salisbury: Catholic housing project expands

Alabaré Christian Care, a charity that works with the homeless, ex-offenders, young people, individuals with a learning difficulty, or drug and alcohol problems, has just taken on another five properties in Salisbury.

The five flats, which are being leased from the Catholic Diocese, will provide bed spaces for 11 people and will be used as Move On homes for men and women from other Alabaré projects. Move On homes offer a more independent environment but still provide a low level of practical support to help them develop the skills and confidence needed to live completely independently.

Thanks to a substantial donation of £67,000 from Salisbury District Council and another generous donation from the Catholic Diocese, Alabaré is now refurbishing all five of the flats ready for their new tenants.

Deacon John Proctor said: "St Osmunds Parish is so pleased to be working in partnership with Alabaré to utilise its properties for the benefit of the vulnerable in our city."

Five people have already been put forward for rooms in the new Move On flats. One of those is Paul (not his real name) who has been living in Damascus House for the last six months. He says "I'm really looking forward to having a place that I can call my own and a home that I am happy to invite my son and daughter to. Being proud of where you live does wonders for your self respect and confidence. If it wasn't for the hard work and help of the staff at Damascus House I wouldn't be where I am today, so thank you".
