Westminster Cathedral live on BBC Radio 3
BBC Radio 3 will be broadcasting the Office of Tenebrae live from Westminster Cathedral at 4pm on Wednesday 8 April 2009.
Tenebrae is a service which takes place on the evenings of Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Holy Week and takes its name from the extinguishing of candles which happens gradually through the sequence of readings, psalms and motets by Victoria. At the end of the service, the last candle having been hidden behind the altar leaving the church in total darkness, a Strepitus or great noise is made, symbolising the earthquake that followed Christ's death. The first nocturn begins directly with Psalm 69. The Choir will sing Tenebrae Responsories by Tomas Luis de Victoria and Christus Factus est by Felice Anerio.
The choir of Westminster Cathedral will be conducted by Martin Baker, Master of Music. The celebrant will be Father Michael Dunne, Chaplain of Westminster Cathedral and meditations will be given by Canon Christopher Tuckwell.
