New editor for The Tablet


The Tablet, one of the one of the leading international Catholic weekly journals in the English-speaking world, is soon to have a new editor. The Tablet Publishing Company announced today that Catherine Pepinster will take up the post on 1 January 2004. She succeeds John Wilkins who retires at the end of the year after 22 years in the role. Ms Pepinster will be the first woman editor in The Tablet's 163-year history. A journalist for over 20 years, she has substantial experience in local and national newspapers. For the last nine years, she has held editorial posts at the Independent and the Independent on Sunday. Catherine is a practising Catholic and is particularly interested in issues of human rights, ethics, and spirituality. John Wilkins has been a most successful editor of The Tablet. Circulation has more than doubled during his tenure and under his editorial leadership the influence of The Tablet has grown throughout the Catholic world and beyond. It is read in most English-speaking countries, and by many Christians in other denominations. In a statement, the directors of the Tablet Publishing Company said they had ndertaken an extensive review of internal and external candidates to succeed John Wilkins. and were delighted that Catherine Pepinster had agreed to take up the post. They said she had 'the right combination of experience and skills for this most important role and the ability to build on the great success of the Wilkins years.'
