Obituary: George Every, poet, historian and theologian

George Every, poet, historian and theologian, who lived at Oscott College, Birmingham, for the last thirty years of his life, has died at the age of 94.

During his life as an Anglican monk at Kelham, he was part of the literary circles of TS Eliot, CS Lewis and Charles Williams, and wrote and published poetry all his life.

As a historian of religion he ranged widely, but his passion was for the world of Byzantium, on which he published a seminal book, The Byzantine Patriarchate in 1947 (2nd edition 1962).

Well known as a lecturer and author bringing together the worlds of poetry, history and religion, George Every made a unique contribution to both Anglican and Catholic life in the twentieth century. His Requiem Mass and burial will take place at Oscott College, Birmingham at 12 noon on Friday 12 September. All friends welcome. Please contact 0121 321 5037 for more information.
